Johnny Michael Goodwin, 62, passed away Wednesday, January 27, 2010 in Oklahoma. Services will be held at 2:00 PM, Tuesday, February 2, at Sunray Church of Christ with Jonathan Zerby, minister of the church officiating, assisted by his brother, Jeff Goodwin. Burial will be in Lane Memorial Cemetery by Morrison Funeral Directors.
Johnny Michael Goodwin was born January 5, 1948 in Amarillo, Texas to John H. and Nellie Goodwin. He was the first of five children and grew up farming and ranching in Sunray most of his life. Other pursuits in later life included tomato rancher, school crossing guard and number one animal control officer in the history of the city of Sunray. He celebrated his 62nd birthday on January 5 with a big smile while wearing the big birthday sombrero at Adelita's Mexican food restaurant in Wilburton, Oklahoma. The next day he was found unconscious and that began a struggle to overcome recent and recurrent complications with hydrocephalus. He lost the battle on January 27. He was also a poet, a gentleman and a gentle man. Johnny had been a resident of Sunray all of life and was a member of the Sunray Church of Christ.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Survivors include; his children, Bryan Goodwin and wife, Janna of Canute, Okla, Amanda Stone and husband, Sammy of Sunray, and Meredith Thompson of Dumas; sisters, Debbie Hill of Wilburton, Okla, Melinda Rives of Kyle; brothers, Jeff Goodwin of Fort Collins, Colo, and Jay Goodwin of Sunray; his uncle, J.A. Layton of Oroville, Calif; his aunt, Billie Jean Hickman of Rockdale; Seven grandchildren have also enriched Johnny’s life; and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews.
The family suggest memorial be to Amarillo Speech, Hearing, and Language Center, 1300 Wallace Blvd, Amarillo, TX 79106 or to the National Multiple Sclerosis Society, Panhandle Division, 6222 Canyon Dr, Amarillo, TX 79109.
The family will be at the family home North of Sunray.
