John C. Tobias Sr., 74 of Stratford, passed away on Wednesday, November 7, 2018. The funeral mass will be celebrated at 11 o’clock in the morning on Saturday, November 10, 2018 at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church. Interment will follow in the Stratford Cemetery. The rosary will be recited at 6 o’clock in the evening on Friday at the church. Arrangements are entrusted to Morrison Funeral Directors.
John was born on November 23, 1943 in Copeland, KS to Isaac and Elodia (Nevarez) Tobias. John enlisted in the Air Force where he earned the rank of Airman Basic. He was united in marriage to Adela Castaneda on November 16, 1974 in Perryton, TX; the couple moved to Stratford in 1976 where they would raise their family and make their home. John was known for his wit and great sense of humor. He loved to tell stories and entertain folks. He would always reply to his family when they told him that he looked good, with “I always look good, just feel bad”. He was a member of the St. Joseph’s Catholic
Church and will be missed by his family and friends.
John was preceded in death by his parents; brothers: Joe Tobias and Eufemio “Tony” Tobias; nephews: Toby Tobias and Garrett Eslick.
He is survived by his wife, Adela, of the home; children: Christie Santome and husband Jose Luis of Cactus, John “J.J.” Tobias Jr. and wife Suzanne of Amarillo, Tracy Tobias and husband Jose Michel of Stratford, and J.R. Tobias of Amarillo; 12 grandchildren and 1 great grandchild; brother: Manuel “Toby” Tobias and wife Vickie; sisters: Frances “Fran” Robbins and husband Bill, Emilie Jaglinski and husband Dennis, Josie Peacock and husband Mike, Teresa Eslick and husband Lee; sister in law: Teresa Tobias and many other extended family members.
The family suggests with gratitude that memorials be made to the Garrett Eslick Scholarship Fund, 914 S Bliss, Dumas TX 79029.
