Alpha “Oleta” Estep Skipworth Self was born on May 21, 1923 to Harve and Lizzy Estep in Weston, TX. She departed this world on May 8, 2026, two weeks before her 103rd birthday.
Oleta was united in marriage to JC Skipworth; he preceded her in death. Later she married Carl Robert "Bob" Self on September 6, 1953, in McKinney, Texas. Together, they built a life filled with love and partnership, co-owning and operating Bob Self Shoes, a testament to their shared entrepreneurial spirit and dedication. Her contributions to the business were as steadfast as her love for those around her.
Her affiliation at First Methodist Church was deeply connected to her faith. Oleta was an active member of her church choir, where her voice brought joy and inspiration to many. Her faith also guided her through life's challenges and joys, providing strength and comfort. Known for her exquisite culinary skills, Oleta found happiness in cooking, sharing meals that brought family and friends together. Her kitchen was a place of warmth and hospitality, reflecting her generous nature.
Family was the cornerstone of Oleta’s life. She adored her grandchildren and found immense joy in their presence, nurturing them with the same loving care she extended to all those she held dear. Though preceded in death by her parents, and her beloved husbands, JC Skipworth and Carl Robert "Bob" Self, Oleta’s legacy endures in the hearts of those she touched. Oleta was also preceded in death by her son: Larry J Skipworth; daughter: Lana Iverach; stepdaughter: Diana Williams and 9 brothers and sisters.
Oleta is survived by her son: Charles Skipworth and wife Ellen of Dumas, TX; grandchildren: Brandon Skipworth and wife Kylene and their daughters, Lauren and Allyson; Derek Skipworth and wife Kyra and their children Brailyn and Callaway; Steven Skipworth and wife Caren and their children Sydney and Jasen; Carol Jean Neal and husband Tim and their children Melissa, Austin, Lindsay and Sean; Ambra Finstad and husband Doyle and their children, Brittany and Michael; Eric Glover and children Andrea, Amber and Kaleb; Richard Williams; and sister: Audrey Stembridge.
The community of Dumas, Texas, and all who knew Oleta will remember her as a woman of grace, strength, and kindness. Her life was a beautiful tapestry woven with love, faith, and dedication.
A visitation to honor and remember Alpha Oleta Self will be held on May 11, 2026, from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM at Beeson-Morrison Funeral Directors, located at 1015 S Dumas Avenue, Dumas, TX 79029. A funeral service will follow on May 12, 2026, at 2:00 PM at the First Methodist Church, 401 Binkley Avenue, Dumas, TX 79029 with interment to follow at Northlawn Memorial Gardens.
