Amos Mack McGalliard

September 8, 1954 — January 9, 2022

Amos Mack McGalliard, 67, of Dumas passed away on Sunday, January 9, 2022.

Amos was born September 8, 1954 in Mountainair, New Mexico to Mack and Katherine (nee Peel) McGalliard; but was raised in Argyle, Texas.

Throughout junior high and high school most of his time was spent working ranches, rodeos, feed stores, and boot & saddle shops. Amos played football and ran track; was a member of the FFA, Rodeo Club and the 4-H. He apprenticed with the Nighthawk Saddle Company after graduating from Denton High in 1974.

He spent more than 30 years ranching alongside his wife and family; with another 10 years working for DISD. Throughout his ranching life, Amos worked on or managed several ranches in multiple states, handling thousands of head of cattle and hundreds of horses. From windmill climber and medic to bronc stomper and basic mechanics, he did it all. After retirement, he still worked in the boot and saddle shop.

He enjoyed gardening, reading, hunting, fishing, photography, and leatherwork most of all. He averaged at least a saddle a year since graduation. Hundreds of rebuilds and thousands of minor repairs passed through his fidgeting fingers.

He is preceded in death by his parents, brothers: Curtis, Jack, & Douglas and two sister-in-laws, Mary Lou and Linda. He is survived by his wife Gaylon (nee Ritcherson) of 36 years, son Stoney & wife Veronica, daughter Anna, and three grandchildren; Serina, Anthony, and Gabriel, all of Dumas. Surviving siblings include a sister Katie of Denton, Texas and two brothers, Tommy of Gainesville, Texas and Phillip & wife Toni of Aurora, Colorado. Amos leaves behind three generations of nieces and nephews, many cousins and a host of wonderful friends.

There will be no funeral service. In accordance with Amos' wishes, a gathering in his honor will be held at a later time. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to The Window on the Plains Museum and The Art Center.
