Charles Sheldon

June 18, 1934 — October 11, 2022

Charles Sheldon, 88 of Dumas, passed away on Tuesday, October 11, 2022.  Funeral services are scheduled for 2 o'clock in the afternoon on Saturday, October 15, 2022 at First Baptist Church with Pastor Laquita Jones, pastor of First United Methodist Church, officiating.  Interment will follow in Northlawn Memorial Gardens under the direction of Beeson ~ Morrison Funeral Directors.  The family will receive friends from 6 o'clock until 8 o'clock in the evening on Friday at the funeral home.  

Charles was born June 18, 1934, in Texhoma, Oklahoma to Charles and Nola Sheldon.  He moved to the Derrick Ranch in Dumas in 1935 when he was 11 months old.  He resided on the Derrick Ranch, next door to the house in which he was raised, until his death.   

Charles graduated from Dumas High School in 1951 and received a football scholarship to Panhandle A&M College.  While attending college, he met Janey Armstrong who he married in 1953.  After graduating from Panhandle A&M College with a degree in Animal Science in 1955, he returned to Dumas to farm.   He was a great husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. 

Over the years Charles was involved in many organizations benefiting Moore County including the Dumas Noon Lions Club, Moore County Junior Livestock Show Association and Moore County Fair.  He was involved with the Moore County Livestock Show for over 75 years as an exhibitor and volunteer.  Additionally, Charles served on the Rita Blanca Electric Co-Op Board for 40 years. 

Charles was named the 2014-2015 Dumas Noon Lions Club Old Timer of the Year.  He was inducted into the Wall of Honor at Demon Stadium in the fall of 2018 and named the 2018 Moore County Farmer/Rancher of the Year the following spring.  He also received the Moore County Junior Livestock Show Top Hand Award and an Honorary Lone Star Farmer Degree from the Texas FFA. 

Charles was a proud supporter of the Dumas Demons and attended his 68th consecutive Demon football season opener this August.  He enjoyed having his family and friends around and always looked for a reason for a get together.  He also enjoyed sharing stories and working with his kids, grandkids and great-grandkids on the farm. 

He was preceded in death by his wife, Janey; son: James Loren Sheldon; parents; brother: Tom Sheldon; and sister: Bertha Clifton.

Charles is survived by his sons: Terry Sheldon and wife Kathy of Amarillo, TX, Chris Sheldon and wife Patricia of Dumas, TX; daughter: Janis Genn and husband Doyle of Dumas, TX; and 9 grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren, and one on the way; sister: Sylvia Spray of Las Cruces, NM; and several nieces, nephews, and extended family members.
