David Anthony Ortiz was born on April 22, 1967, in Walsenburg, Colorado, to Frances and Arthur Ortiz. He spent his early years attending public school in Aguilar, Colorado, before moving to Dumas, Texas, where he continued his education through junior high and high school.
David was known for his strong work ethic throughout his life. His first job was with Sanders Electric, and he later worked for Swift Independent in Amarillo until its closure. Most recently, he was employed with Advanced Pavement as a loader and had recently been appointed to a supervisory role. While working at Swift, David met Pastor William Fifer, who played a significant role in David’s spiritual journey. Pastor Fifer planted the seed of faith, and Evangelist Jerry Gaffney from Washington helped water it—then God gave the increase. David surrendered his life to God in the 1980s and began preaching in the late 1990s. His desire to reconnect with those who influenced his faith led him to discover that Evangelist Gaffney had passed away, but he was blessed to reunite with Pastor Fifer after forty years. David then became a dedicated member of Holy Trinity COGIC, often saying that God had “knitted” him there. A long-held desire of his was fulfilled when he was baptized in the river on June 25, 2025. David’s ministry touched many lives around the world. He was known for his encouraging words, thought-provoking messages, and his ability to inspire self- reflection. His final sermon at Holy Trinity was titled, “Don’t Be Dammed Up; Too Much Junk in Your Trunk.”
David was blessed with one daughter, Noelia, born in December 2004. He was cherished for his humor, charismatic personality, and the many friendships he cultivated. He deeply loved his family, treasured his relationship with God, and held a special bond with his church families. Outside of ministry, he enjoyed cheering for the Denver Broncos and spending time fishing at the lake.
On December 7, 2025, David Ortiz gained his wings and went home to be with his Savior. He was preceded in death by his mother and stepfather, Frances and Robert Gallegos; his father and stepmother, Arthur and Mary Ortiz; his brother-in-law, Duane Montoya; and his niece, Marissa Ortiz.
David is survived by his daughter, Noelia Samples of Stanley, NM; his brothers Charles Ortiz of Amarillo, TX; Frank Ortiz (Dianne) of Canyon Lake, TX; and Joshua Ortiz (Marisol Mendoza) of Dumas, TX; and his sisters Connie Montoya of Dumas, TX; Minnie Gallegos of Dumas, TX; and Roberta Munoz (Gabriel) of Dumas, TX. He also leaves behind numerous aunts and uncles; 13 nieces and nephews; 29 great-nieces and nephews; and 9 great-great-nieces and nephews. He is also remembered by many special friends, including Tom Castro, Darren Wolf, Sandra Zuniga, Tin Man, and numerous others.
David’s legacy of faith, love, and encouragement will continue to live on in the hearts of all who knew him.
The family will hold memorial services at 1 o'clock in the afternoon on Saturday, December 13, 2025, at Encounter Church, 10 Elm Ave, with Pastor William Fifer officiating.
