Dennis Phelps, a respected building contractor and devoted family man, passed away peacefully on April 17, 2026, at his home in Stratford, Texas. Born on September 12, 1942, in Des Moines, Iowa, Dennis lived a full and meaningful life marked by service, dedication, and a deep connection to his community.

Dennis spent his formative years in Stratford, where he attended high school before answering the call to serve his country. He proudly served three years in the United States Navy as an Electricians Mate Third Class aboard the USS Belle Grove and USS Page County. Following his honorable military service, he pursued higher education and graduated from Oklahoma Panhandle State niversity (OPSU) with a degree in History, reflecting his lifelong passion for learning and knowledge.

Professionally, Dennis was a skilled building contractor, renowned for his craftsmanship and integrity. He built and remodeled homes throughout Stratford and contributed his expertise to countless others, helping to shape the physical character of the community he loved. His work stands as a testament to his dedication and skill, leaving a lasting legacy in the area.

A man of varied interests, Dennis was an avid antique dealer and a passionate collector. He was widely recognized as a local history buff, possessing extensive knowledge about Stratford and the surrounding region. His enthusiasm for history was matched by his love of the outdoors, particularly the time he cherished spent caring for his cattle. Dennis was a member of First Christian Church of Stratford and served as chairman of the board for two terms. He was also a Mason and was instrumental in reestablishing the Stratford American Legion Post.

Dennis is survived by his beloved wife of sixty-one years, Sherry Phelps, with whom he shared a devoted partnership at their home. He is also remembered with great affection by his children, Jan Sell and her husband Stacy of Lubbock, Texas, and Nick Phelps and his wife Tiffany of Amarillo, Texas. His grandchildren, Courtenay Carter and her husband Corey of Lubbock, Ethan Shields and his wife Kasidy of Kenton, Oklahoma, Hadlee Shields of Lubbock and Jacob Phelps of Amarillo along with great- Atlas Carter, Benton Shields, and Riata Shields, expected in September, carry forward his memory with love and respect.

Dennis was preceded in death by his parents, Earl and Jackie (French) Phelps, and his brother, Jim Phelps. Their memories remain forever cherished by all who knew then.

A memorial service to honor Dennis’s life will be held on Wednesday, April 22, 2026, beginning at 10 o'clock in the morning at First Christian Church in Stratford, Texas with Alan Shields officiating. Interment will follow in the Stratford Cemetery. Military honors will be provided by American Legion Post #224.

Friends, family, and members of the community are invited to gather to celebrate the remarkable life and enduring contributions of Dennis Phelps. Memorials may be made to the Howard Norvell Green Post 262 of the American Legion.

Dennis’s life was a testament to hard work, loyalty, and a profound connection to his roots. He will be deeply missed by his family, friends, and the community that benefited so greatly from his skill, knowledge, and kindness. His legacy will live on in the homes he built, the history he preserved, and the hearts of those who loved him.
