Harley R Winkelman

Harley R. Winkelman, 86, of Dumas, passed away on Sunday, June 17, 2018. Services are scheduled for 1 o'clock in the afternoon on Thursday, June 21, 2018 at St. John's Lutheran Church with Pastor Brian Hesse officiating and Pastor Troy Scroggins assisting. Private family burial will take place in Dumas Cemetery under the direction of Morrison Funeral Directors. The family will receive friends from 5 o'clock until 7 o'clock in the evening on Wednesday at the funeral home. Harley was born on November 30, 1931 to Arthur and Mary (Pien) Winkelman on a farm in South Dakota where he was raised and later graduated from Bruce High School in South Dakota. Harley was working for Aero Service Corp surveying in Iceland when he was drafted into the United States Army. While in the army, Harley was stationed in Japan and served as a MP. After his service in the Army, Harley went on to attend school at South Dakota State University where he graduated with a degree in Mechanical Engineering. He was united in marriage to Dawn Thompson on August 15, 1958 in Brookings, South Dakota; she preceded him in death in 2017. He moved his family to Dumas in 1975 and worked for Swift and Company for 30 years as Chief Engineer until his retirement in 1989. Harley had a deep love for the Lord, loved spending time with his children, grandchildren and traveling with his wife. Harley was a member of the Dumas Rotary Club and St. John's Lutheran Church. In addition to his wife, he is also preceded in death by his parents, one brother and one sister. Harley is survived by his children: Brian Winkelman and wife Julie, Brenda Kiewiet and husband Richard, all of Dumas, Terry Winkelman and wife Patti of Amarillo, Tom Winkelman and wife Sandy of Possum Kingdom; grandchildren: Jared Troupe, Jennifer Morgan and husband Tim, Lauren Winkelman, Brad Kiewiet and wife Brittney, Logan Fernuik and husband Michael, Candace Kent, Madison Ansett and husband Ian, Allison Kiewiet, Heath Winkelman, Jordan Kiewiet, Megan Winkelman and Brynne Winkelman; eleven great grandchildren; sister: Darla Strande and husband Rich; brothers: Marlin Winkelman and wife Bev and Larry Winkelman and wife Jean; and many other people who affectionately called him Papa. The family suggests with gratitude that memorials be made to St. John's Lutheran Church, 207 S Meredith, Dumas TX 79029.
