James H Dowley

James H. Dowley passed away at his home in Stratford Texas on February 13, 2023. James was born on May 16, 1964, to his mother Vada Joyce Dowley and his father James C. Dowley in Carlsbad, New Mexico. James graduated High School in 1982 from Carlsbad, NM. He also attended ENMU in Portales, New Mexico.

James always said his happy place was in the saddle and for a number of years he made his living on horseback. In 1994 he went to work for the Santa Fe Railway.

James loved starting colts, training  horses, working cattle and team roping. He won the NM State Fair Amateur Ranch Horse competition two years in a row on 2 different horses. He was on the cover of the USTRC magazine for the fastest time in the number 10 team roping in Amarillo Tx.   

James was a talented horseman and loved everything about horses. He could walk into a room and it would light up.  He loved to dance and try new things. He was known for his huge heart and charismatic personality.

Our lives have been made better for knowing him. He will be missed by many and never forgotten.

He was proceeded in death by his parents, Vada Joyce Dowley and James C. Dowley.

He is survived by his stepmother, Karen Dowley, Ransom Canyon, Tx . His sister Glenda Madison (Bryan) Roff Ok.   His sister Tonya Huff, Canyon Tx.   His stepbrother Cooper Black (Shana) Grand Prairie Tx. His Stepsister Edi Grawunder, Vega Tx.  Two nieces, Trisha McClaran(Lance) Bovina Tx and Regan Huff, Borger Tx.

Cremation has taken place and a Celebration of Life is planned in Amarillo Tx ,April 30, at 2 pm. Location is pending.
