Jim was born on May 28, 1954, in Killeen, TX to Charles Collier and Pattie Lou (Wright) Phillips. After his father got out of the military, Jim moved with his family to Dumas, Texas. Jim was an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed camping, fishing, boating, hunting and snow skiing. Growing up he enjoyed family camping trips, arrowhead hunting, and many hunting trips with his father, brothers, and friends. These were some of his most cherished memories, and he later continued these traditions when he had his own family.
During his years in the Dumas school system, he excelled in football, basketball, baseball, and track. He was a member of the 1971 State Championship Baseball Team and was named Dumas High School All -Around Athlete his senior year in 1972. When he graduated high school, he attended Texas A&M University and later Westen Colorado where he was a member of the baseball team.
Jim moved back to Dumas in 1974 and married his high school sweetheart Jeanine Dianne Phipps in 1975. The couple would make their home there and raise their two daughters Kaycie Dianne, and Chelsea Lea. Jim worked in the family business, Phillips and Sons Hardware Store, with his grandmother, father, and uncle and became the manager in 1984. He continued to work there until he retired as the manager in 1994. Also, during this time, he established KC Cattle Company where he raised mama cows and calves.
He continued his love for athletics by playing in a men’s softball league and won the USSSA Class C National Championship with Signs Unlimited. After his playing years, he coached his daughters and their friends in basketball and softball. He was the Dumas 9-10-year-old All-Stars coach in little league and led the softball team to a 4th place finish in the state tournament in Waco. He continued to coach the 11–12-year-old All-Stars in the playoffs the next year. He also coached both of his daughters in AAU Basketball. He enjoyed coaching and watching his daughters especially and was their biggest supporter throughout their high school and college careers. He continued that with his granddaughters and loved attending and supporting them in all their events.
Jim’s family was the most important thing in his life, and he loved being with everyone. He lived as an example of his faith and was a longtime member of the First Methodist Church in Dumas.
He was preceded in death by his father and brother, Bobby Phillips.
Jim is survived by his wife, Dianne of the home; daughters: Kaycie Phillips of Amarillo, TX, Chelsea Paredes and husband Joshua of Amarillo, TX; grandchildren: Ava, Zoey, and Emma Paredes; mother: Patti Phillips; brother: Billy Phillips and wife Carrie of Bedford; and numerous other brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, nieces, nephews, and cousins.
