Joe was born on September 3, 1943, in Fentress, Texas to Jose and Guadalupe Montaña. He grew up in Martindale, Texas, surrounded by the love of a large family who shaped his strong work ethic, deep loyalty, and gentle spirit. On August 15, 1964, Joe married the love of his life, Anita Limon. From that day forward, Joe and Anita walked hand and hand though 61 years of devotion, laughter, hardships, and countless cherished memories. They built a beautiful life together, one rooted in faith, love, and family.
Joe was the proud father of three sons: Joe Jr., Peter, and Steven Montaña. He carried their love with him every day of his life. He worked many years for American Beef, Monfort, Swift, and later for the City of Dumas, where he finished his career in 2010. No matter where he worked, Joe was known as a dependable, kind-hearted man who treated everyone with respect.
Joe’s greatest joy was his family. He adored his grandchildren and great- grandchildren, who affectionately knew him as having a loving presence and someone who would light up with joy the moment they entered the room. He loved being outdoors, working with his hands, fixing things, and building whatever his family needed. And on Sundays, you could find him cheering on his beloved Redskins, never wavering in his loyalty. But above all, Joe’s happiest moments were when his entire family was gathered together laughing, sharing meals, and filling the room with the warmth that only family can create. Those were the moments he treasured most.
Joe is preceded in death by his parents, Jose and Guadalupe Montaña; his brother, Jimmy Montaña; his nephew, Manuel Montaña Jr.; and his sons, Steven Montaña, Peter Montaña, and Joe Montaña Jr. Though he leaves this world, he enters into a heavenly reunion that his heart longed for.
He is survived by his devoted wife Anita Montaña of Dumas, TX, who remained by his side through every chapter of life. Joe leaves behind grandchildren he loved dearly: Christina Hughes and husband Zane of Amarillo, TX; Joe Montaña III of San Antonio, TX; Rosalinda Reyes of Dumas, TX; Jonathan Montaña and wife Elizabeth of San Angelo, TX; Edward Holguin and wife Alyssa of Carlsbad, NM; Kirk Montaña of Waco, TX; Brianna Counts and husband Matthew of San Angelo, TX; Erik Montaña and husband Demarcus of Dallas, TX.
Joe’s legacy continues through his great-grandchildren: Aaliyah Sandoval and Amaya Reyes of Dumas, TX; Addison, Oliver, and Emery Montaña of San Angelo, TX; Arabella, Ziazan, and Peter Counts of San Angelo, TX; each one holding a special place in is heart. He is also survived by his siblings, who shared his journey from childhood into adulthood: Olivia Martinez and husband Santo of Salina, KS; Lydia Gonzales and husband Chencho of Fentress, TX; Rick Montaña and wife Karen of Miami, KS; Robert Montaña of Fall River, KS; Bobby Montaña and wife Simona of Prairie Lea, TX; Mollie Paredes of Salina, KS; and Manuel Montaña Sr. and wife Janie of Prairie Lea, TX. Along with them, numerous nieces, nephews, and extended family will forever cherish Joe’s memory.
Joe will be remembered for his quiet strength, his unwavering love for his family, and the gentle way he touched the lives of everyone who knew him, and the world is better because he was here.
The family suggests memorials be made to the Make a Wish Foundation, an organization that brings joy to children which is something Joe would have loved.
