Joe Lee Schuman, 83, passed away Friday, October 6, 2017 at Dumas Memorial Hospital. A graveside service is scheduled for 10 o'clock in the morning on Monday, October 9, 2017 at Dumas Cemetery with Pastor Keith Hight of Middlewell Methodist Church officiating under the direction of Morrison Funeral Directors of Dumas, Texas. Family and friends are invited for a visitation following the service at 103 Bellaire St. Joe was born July 1, 1934, to Fritz and Linnie (Schlee) Schuman in Dalhart, Texas during the Dust Bowl Days. He was baptized in their hometown of Priddy, Texas at Zion Lutheran Church and was confirmed in Dumas, Texas, at St. John Lutheran Church. Joe attended Dumas schools and graduated with the DHS Class of 1952. He was united in marriage to Marilyn McEntire on June 9, 1953, and together they had two children. She preceded him in death in 1992. Beginning early in his childhood, Joe learned the farming and cattle business from his father. Joe was the owner/operator of Mesa Larga Cattle Company where he farmed in Dumas and held ranching interests in Capulin, New Mexico. He retired from ranching in 1999 and bought the home built by his parents in 1951 in Dumas. Joe spent the remainder of his years with his longtime companion Virginia Mixon. Joe was best known for his fun spirit, entertaining at barbeques and cookouts with fresh picked corn and playing cards with good friends. He was honored to have relatives named after him, a great nephew Nicolas Joe Schuman and his daughter Emberly Joe and his great granddaughter Jolie 'JoJo' Schuman. He is also preceded in death by his parents, brother Dale Schuman, great grandson Tanner Schuman and nephews Robby Schuman and Jeff Schuman. Joe is survived by son Gary and wife Paula of Dumas, daughter Vicki Schuman Freeman and husband Mark of Texhoma, Oklahoma, and brother Donnie Schuman of Dumas. He was known as 'Papaw' to Jared and Jay Schuman and wife Shayla of Dumas, Matt and Ann E. Freeman of Texhoma, Oklahoma, and three great grandchildren, Jake, Brooklyn, and Jolie. He is also survived by nephews, Pete Schuman and wife Debra, Mutt Schuman and wife Christen and their children. Also, Nick Schuman and daughter Emberly, Jessica Schuman Gerhardt and husband Stephen in addition to many beloved cousins from Priddy, Texas. Memorials may be made to Middlewell Methodist Church, 5859 Road W, Channing, TX 79018.
