Obituary

Marilyn Pettit, a cherished educator and beloved member of the Dumas community, passed away on February 23, 2026, at the age of 82 in Amarillo, Texas State University. Born on October 26, 1943, in Dumas, Texas, Marilyn dedicated 35 years of her life to teaching at Morningside Elementary, sharing her passion for learning and nurturing young minds.

After graduating from Dumas High School, she furthered her education by earning a Bachelor's Degree in Education from West Texas. Throughout her career, Marilyn was known for her innovative teaching methods and her deep commitment to her students, leaving an indelible mark on many lives.

On April 1, 1967, Marilyn married Carl Pettit Jr. in Clayton, New Mexico. Their union was filled with love and shared experiences, which continued until his passing. Marilyn was a devoted member of the First Baptist Church, where she found strength and community.

In addition to her dedication to education, Marilyn had a zest for life beyond the classroom. She found joy and creativity in painting, fostering her artistic talents throughout her life. Her works were a reflection of her vibrant spirit and love for beauty.

Marilyn is survived by her sons, Bryan Pettit and Jeff Pettit, alongside her grandchildren, Ty Pettit and wife Emily, and Shyan Pettit.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Carl Pettit Jr., her parents, John and Lucille Flowers, and her siblings: brother Curtis, brother John, and sister Joan. Marilyn's legacy will continue through her family and the countless lives she touched as an educator and friend.

The viewing for Marilyn Pettit will take place on February 27, 2026, from 1 o'clock in the afternoon until 8 o'clock in the evening at Beeson-Morrison Funeral Directors, located at 1015 S Dumas Ave, Dumas, TX. The graveside service will be held on February 28, 2026, at 2 o'clock in the afternoon at the Dumas Cemetery with Pastor Zane Powers, officiating. 

Marilyn Pettit will be remembered not only for her contributions as a teacher and her love for her family but also for the kindness and compassion she embodied throughout her life.
