Mary Jane Ray, 72 formerly of Dumas, passed away on Tuesday, December 6, 2022. A funeral service is scheduled for 2 o’clock in the afternoon on Saturday, December 10, 2022, at Morrison Memorial Chapel with Grady Burkhalter, officiating. Cremation will follow. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Friday from 6 o’clock to 8 o’clock in the evening. Arrangements are under the direction of Beeson ~ Morrison Funeral Directors.
Mary Jane was born on February 20, 1950, in Roy, NM to Joe E. and Adelia (Maynes) Herrera. She was united in marriage to Charles Ray on March 2, 1970, in Dumas, TX. Mary Jane was the heart of the home. She cherished her grandchildren and made them all blankets. Mary Jane could be found in her kitchen, where she loved cooking and cooked for Dumas Noon Lions Club for 25 years. She also loved to dance, paint and play bingo.
Mary Jane was active in Eagle’s Lodge and Girls and Boys Scouts where they all called her “Mama Ray”. She was a second mother to numerous children. She was of Catholic Faith and will be greatly missed by all her family and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents: Joe E. and Adelia Herrera; grandson: Walker Cooksey; brother: Freddy Herrera; sisters-in-law: Vickie Herrera, Gail Herrera, Sandy Ray, Geraldine Hulette, and Marsha Ray; brothers-in-law: Robert Evan, Harold Hawthorne, Bobby Ray, and Harold Ray.
Mary Jane is survived by her loving husband, Charles of the home: daughters: Jenny Ray of Amarillo, Cynthia Cooksey and husband Charles of Dumas, TX; grandchildren: Desimber Goodman, Kimberlee Pierce, Braxton Cooksey, Trinity Cooksey, Grayson Pierce, Peyton Goodman, Presleigh Goodman, Legend Campos; siblings: Tony Herrera of Clayton, NM, Gloria Evans of Hugoton, KS, Chris Herrera of Texline, TX, Orlando Herrera and wife Vangie of Goodwill, TX, Krist Aguilera and husband Fabian of Amarillo, TX, Lucy Howell and husband Steve, Lena Muse and husband Joe; sister-in-law: Betty Hawthorne of Killeen, TX; brothers-in-law: Kenneth Ray and wife Jonnie of Pampa, TX, Mike Ray of Amarillo, TX, Keith Ray and wife Maxie of Amarillo, TX.; special friend: Derek Lewis; numerous nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews, great-great nieces and nephews, and many wonderful friends.
