Shirley Hokanson

Shirley Hokanson, 82 of Dumas, passed away on Sunday, October 13, 2019. Graveside services will be held at 10 o'clock in the morning on Wednesday, October 16, 2019 at the Hokanson Family Farm Cemetery, 11894 Stone Road with Rev. Mike Watson, minister of Calvary Baptist Church, officiating. Memorial services will follow at 2 o'clock on that afternoon at Calvary Baptist Church with Rev. Brad Foster, former minister of Calvary Baptist Church, officiating. Arrangements are entrusted to Morrison Funeral Directors. Shirley was born on December 29, 1936 in Allison, OK to Roy Earl and Natalia (McKinnis) Byrd. She attended school in Dumas and graduated from Dumas High School. She was united to Tom "Hoky" Hokanson on November 24, 1956 in Dumas where the couple would make their home. Shirley was the true matriarch of her family, organizing and hosting most of the family get togethers including anything from birthdays to wedding and baby showers. To simply say she was a homemaker would be a great understatement as she was known by her family as the hostess with the mostest. Shirley was always thinking of and had a genuine concern for other people and their well being and success. Shirley was an avid bridge player and a member of the Calvary Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Tom "Hoky" Hokanson and a brother Donald Byrd. Shirley is survived by her sons: Roy Carroll Hokanson and wife LeeAnn of Dumas, TX, Raymond Alton Hokanson and wife Tracy of Arlington, TX; grandchildren: Shawn Carroll Hokanson and wife Amanda of Dumas, TX, Andrew Lee Hokanson and wife Becca of Lubbock, TX, Crystal Dawn Hokanson and wife Amber of Dumas, TX; great-grandchildren: Jaxon, Janae, Jentri, Camden, Cora, Bailee, Rylee, and Bentlee; siblings: Daphne Lackey of Sunray, TX, Fern Page of Slaton, TX, Roy Dale Byrd of Dumas, TX, Ramona Wren of Amarillo, TX, Larry Byrd and wife Mary Ann of Dumas, TX, Gary Byrd of Dumas, TX, Patricia Smith and husband Gaylon of Alba, TX, Gloria Adams and husband Roger of Dumas, TX, Carolyn McGee and husband Ed of Lubbock, TX, and Rhodora Alberty of Amarillo, TX. The family suggests with gratitude memorials be made to Memorial Hospice, 209 S Bliss, Dumas, TX 79029

This obituary describes my definitions of memories of Shirley. I never ate a meal that bunch put together whether simple or fancy I could say anything but Um, Yummy, Great! Tom and I met Shirley and Hoky when we were married in Calvary Baptist Church in 1974. They were a special couple and I know they are rejoicing at being together again never to be parted. Hallelujah, what a Savior! Grieve-as-you must, not-as-others will tell you is right, wrong or indifferent. Travel the new pathway ahead, there are no pathways as each of you has their own individual one. Cling tightly to God's unfailing and unchanging hands, He will lead you through anything you will face. May God bless each and every single one of you.

Dear family- I can't begin to tell you what you all mean to me. Shirley and Hoky took Pam under their wings, and loved us for so many years. I feel your loss very deeply. Thank you for the privilege of being a part of her memorial service. Brad
